About Audley

The Audley Lodge  no.7281

Saffron Walden, Essex

Welcome to the Audley Lodge no.7281 on the register of the United Grand Lodge of England.

A Lodge of free and accepted Masons located in the historical market town of Saffron Walden, North Essex.

Our Lodge was consecrated on 18th June 1953 and continues to enjoy a healthy and active membership to this present day.

We work a form of Emulation ritual that we refer to as 'Audley Working'. We believe it is our high quality of work at both Lodge of Instruction and within our Lodge that keeps our members engaged and proud to be a part of our unique environment. This is reflected by our many guests who we see returning frequently to enjoy the atmosphere and ambience that is a natural part of Audley Masonry.

In addition to our regular meetings, we also hold several social events throughout the year and take part in public engagements locally to raise the profile of our proud organisation.

We hope that this website manages to answer some of the questions you may have regarding Freemasonry in general and hopes to also give you a flavour of what our members in the Audley Lodge do and what has attracted members to our society for the last several hundred years.

We welcome visiting Masons who have been regularly initiated under the authority of, or recognised by the United Grand Lodge of England. Please provide us with brief details of your Masonic association when making enquiries via our contacts page.

Please feel free to contact us with any further enquiries you may have and you will be guaranteed a warm, welcoming reception.

Member Testimonials

“I became a Freemason in 2011 after having previously being invited to the Burns Night event at Audley Lodge, which non - masonic guests are invited to. It was here that I got to experience the warmth and welcome of the people in attendance. This led to an intrigue of what goes on in the Lodge and what both my Grandfather and Great-Grandfathers got up to at their meetings, so when invited to join, I did without hesitation
I feel that I get a sense of inclusion from all the members in the Lodge which I has helped build my character and confidence with every step of my advancement.

"Having family members who are Freemasons, I have had a long interest in Masonry but having spent my career in London & New York I never had the time to commit to while working full time. When I stopped, it became apparent that my social network was all based in the city, I hardly knew anyone in the town I lived. So my primary reason for joining was a make new friends and build a social network around the area I live.
Since joining, I have found a new and varied social network group. Our common interest connects us, but our backgrounds, experiences and stories are all very different. The diversity within the Lodge ensures conversations at the festive board are always interesting.
I find the history of Freemasonry and the knowledge gained from the side orders fascinating. It gives you a much different perspective when visiting cathedrals and other historic sites on what you see."

"I became a Freemason with the view to do a little good in the world in the company of like - minded people.
Having been a member of Audley Lodge getting on for 50 years I have always found its members to be welcoming and friendly. I have always felt that I get a real sense of belonging from Freemasonry and an appreciation that we are trying to be better men in everything we do.
Over my time I have the privilege to have had a hand in all the various offices and helped in making it what it is today, the premier lodge in Saffron Walden."

“I became a Freemason after spending many long hours discussing the subject with a family friend and bombarding him with questions about the esoteric side of it. It became clear that it was about so much more: benevolence, brotherly love and striving to be a better person. I haven’t been disappointed.
In enjoy the ritual, its history and allegories. Getting the ritual just right gives you an immense sense of pride, but it’s never a sole effort. The teamwork is evident and regularly attending LoI reinforces this. In fact, this is where you truly get that feeling of a fraternity working in concert to lift each other up.
The charity for me is the other big draw. Knowing that your small piece is part of a larger pot to help those who are in most need really does make you feel you are making an effort to help.
In all the Masonic orders I belong to, everyone is friendly and welcoming. Everyone is equal and wants the best for each other and to do good for those outside Masonry also.”

"Both my father & grandfather were committed Freemasons. I saw from an early age the friendship & enjoyment they got from their membership. I wanted to follow in their footsteps and to also to be involved in charitable work.
Being involved in Freemasonry has many benefits, like the friendships I have made and the camaraderie within the lodge, but there is also a lot of self-satisfaction in all the good work we do."

"I had arranged to retire from the last of my management roles in 2006 and was looking for an activity that would provide an atmosphere of fellowship and fun. My father was a senior Mason in the Province of Staffordshire and had recently come to live near us in Saffron Walden. He suggested that I may enjoy Masonry and eventually proposed me into Audley Lodge.
I enjoy and benefit from the friendship received from my brother Masons and also get a deep sense of satisfaction from the work that we put into improving the lives of our fellow citizens.
I get a great deal of excitement knowing that there is always more to discover about Masonry. There is a satisfaction in knowing that our organisation constantly rises to meet the challenges faced in our society whether it be providing assistance to natural disasters or providing funding for PPE to our front line staff.
